The Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine (BIOM) presented its 19th Annual International Seminar, “Innovation in Osteopathic Medicine and Outreach,” Oct. 6-8 during OMED 2017 in Philadelphia.
The BIOM program included a day-long seminar on Oct. 7 featuring osteopathic physicians and others presenting on the development of global osteopathic medical programs, from graduate education to research and beyond.
In addition, BIOM partnered with DOCARE, the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), and the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) to mount a competition with three divisions and a poster event.
The BIOM Poster Session allowed students who have submitted research abstracts to the BIOM Research Abstract Competition to display posters on those research projects. Students also were allowed to submit posters on global outreach projects they’ve conducted. This event is noncompetitive and open to all students and residents who have completed eligible research and outreach work.
First-place prizes of $750 and second-place prizes of $500 were awarded in each category, as well as grand prize of $1,500 to the top overall entrant. All first-place winners were invited to give a presentation during the BIOM Seminar.
The overall competition winner is Katharine Smolinski, OMS III, for her narrative medicine essay.
The BIOM Narrative Medicine Essay Competition is an inaugural BIOM competition aimed at letting osteopathic medical students and residents explore global health and clinical medicine through the written word.

The BIOM Global Health Outreach Competition allowed students to submit brief reflections on any international health-related experience they had between Sept. 1, 2016, to Aug. 31, 2017.

The BIOM Research Abstract Competition accepted submissions from osteopathic medical students and residents who completed health research in any international location between Sept. 1, 2016, to Aug. 31, 2017.
