Timothy J. Kowalski, DO, D.FACN, is an AOA board-certified osteopathic child psychiatrist. Having served as inaugural dean for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas Campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he now is the Vice Provost for Professional and Public Affairs for all four campuses at VCOM.
Following his honorable discharge in 1993 from the U.S. Army after ten years of service, Dr. Kowalski was employed by the South Carolina Department of Mental Health for 17 years, rising to the position of Director of Professional Services of the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute in Columbia, South Carolina prior to assuming his leadership role in osteopathic medical education.
A long-time resident of South Carolina, Dr. Kowalski serves as an advocate to support health care in his state. He is past president of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society and is the first osteopathic physician to have served as president of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, where he currently serves as a member of the board’s Internal Review Committee.
At the national level, Dr. Kowalski is past president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners as well as the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists. Prior to joining the Board of Trustees, he served the AOA in numerous capacities, including Vice Chair of the Bureau of State Government Affairs and numerous committees within the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. Additionally, Dr. Kowalski served on the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards as well as the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine’s Executive Committee of the Board of Deans.
Dr. Kowalski earned his osteopathic medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. For graduate medical education, he completed his transitional internship, psychiatric residency and child psychiatry fellowship at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
