In mainstream media, physicians are often depicted wearing a white coat, stethoscope and name badge with the letters ‘MD.’ In contrast, television and news coverage of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) is notably absent or skewed. As a result, osteopathic medicine is not as well-recognized or well-known as allopathic medicine. One example was seen recently on ABC’s “The View,” where host Sunny Hostin described DOs as not being medical doctors. This could not be further from the truth.

Loss is a major factor in the origin and history of osteopathic medicine: A.T. Still, DO, MD, suffered the passing of four children to infectious disease and his first wife to childbirth complications. Combined with his terrible experiences in the Civil War, these tragedies caused him to question his profession, leading him to want to give up medicine forever. Instead, he used the love and devotion in his heart to transform his grief over time into a deep commitment to serve patients in a new and better way.

Silence is a pause, a rest between two notes in a musical piece and a holding space between words spoken aloud. It is a mark that leaves an intensity behind its trail, creating greater emphasis on the words that come before and after. We’ve been told that silence can be uncomfortable. It is a channel of communication that is understated, yet fierce in its expression.

When I was studying narrative medicine at Columbia University’s Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics, students were asked to tell a story about a significant health encounter. This is what I said: I once accompanied my elderly father to his doctor’s visit. The physician reported that his bad cholesterol was too high, and that he should cut back on all the shrimp he was consuming or else he’d die of heart disease.
